Are YOU Creating Your Own Career Limitations?

Look, navigating the job market can be tricky, especially if you’re like the old me and you’re underestimating your value. I don’t know about you, but this led me to apply for (and accept) the same unfulfilling, non-engaging work over and over again. 

 

The problem is that we lower our expectations of what we THINK we can achieve and in doing so, we limit ourselves to what we believe is possible for us. I love the quote from Jim Carrey:

 

“So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect so we never ask the universe for it.”

 

THIS WAS ME! I was so afraid of putting my hat in the ring for those “big, exciting jobs” that I wouldn’t do it (or if I did, I was not telling the hiring manager why they should hire me in my resumé and just stacking up rejections). Instead, I stayed in my comfort zone applying for the jobs that I knew I could get–yay ego boost! While my ego was falsely inflating, my confidence was seriously draining.

 

If it sounds like we’re unfortunate twins in this aspect, let’s talk about 3 things you can start doing today to build your confidence and see your INCREDIBLE value.

 

1. Acknowledge Your Achievements

It’s so easy to overlook how much you’ve accomplished and the impact it has had. Too often we’re passing it off as “just something I do” or unimportant. Stepping back and really seeing these things for what they are is key! Try keeping a kudos folder where you regularly jot down your accomplishments, big or small, and the impact it had. 

 

2. Reshape Your Mindset

Ok, not to get “woo, woo” or anything, but your mindset plays a crucial role in your confidence levels and how you perceive your experience. Instead of going straight to downplaying when thinking about what you’ve done, let your ego come to play. Smile and say, “yea, I did that”. Brag to yourself about yourself. Make this a journaling practice until you no longer have to convince yourself, you just know.

 

3. Seek Feedback

Sometimes it takes a third party to help shake us out of our old behaviors. Requesting feedback from co-workers, bosses, mentors, friends, family, or a coach can provide valuable insights into your strengths and skills. Ask what they come to you for over anyone else, what they think you do well, what your superpower is. I think you’ll be surprised at how the things you discount are some of your greatest strengths.


Remember, building confidence is a journey, not a destination. It’s going to feel uncomfortable at times, but you’re only going to continue to grow.
